Tactus Technology has developed a new type of display that does just that and want the gadgets in the world to know. The only difference from a normal touch screen is the final layer where the system can generate a certain volume in specific areas. When you do not need any type of button, the layer is completely flat Tactus without adding thickness to the whole.
The question is will they find a manufacturer willing to integrate it into one of your gadgets? So far only seen a fully functional prototype at SID Display Week 2012, although of course has garnered rave reviews from the experts. The favorable predictions place it in a tablet or smartphones by 2013, but nothing is certain.
